Today we all went snorkeling on the island of Gili Meno. Well it's not really what I think of as an island, in the sense that I can cross it without breaking a sweat, but still. Anyway back to the story.
We all swam out and the first few minutes everything was relatively uneventful. I felt scared at times but mostly it was really cool. The most dangerous thing I saw was a small sea urchin, but it didn't try anything.
We swam out into the deeper places, the coral kind of died off. There was a big slope and it was quite gloomy.
All of a sudden out of the gloom there was a turtle! It was really cool, it was the first time I had seen a turtle in the wild. It had a checkerboard pattern on it's shell, and it seemed to be hanging about the surface, occasionally popping it's head up to breathe.
There were a bunch of colorful fish - small electric blue, bright green, jet black - every color you could imagine and then some I had never imagined. One was deep indigo and it was fighting a fish that was deep black with a few splotches of purple.
Later when we were getting out Papa saw a sea snake and shoved me ahead. I had no idea what was going on and wondered why he did it. Afterwards he told me that it was a poisonous snake about 2 feet long with black and white stripes. The guy at the dive center had helpful advice "Don't touch them".
