Leaving Hugo | Oscar

I'm writing this as we are in the parking lot of the Hideaway Bakery, waiting for Mama to return with a chocolate croissant for Angus and a lemon bar for me. Typing on a hybrid between Papa's phone and Angus' bluetooth keyboard, I can listen to Angus read out his cat comic book in his Kindle while Papa struggles to turn down the volume on the radio. I'm reflecting on the last sight of Hugo as we drove down the long concrete driveway, out the metal bar gate, and onto the long road home. His paws muddy and dirty, as I found out when I hugged him and had to wash my hands twice afterwards. He looked excited and ready for an adventure when Mama turned on the Prius, but then he appeared confused as we four got in and closed the doors behind us. I'm guessing he thinks we're going for a short trip to a cafe. That's partially true. It was heartbreaking to leave him, looking at us confusedly as Grandma held his collar to prevent him from  bounding after us, like he does at their house whenever a car tries to leave or enter. The thing that kept me okay was the arrangement to do a program on Hugo where we track his heart rate and steps through Mama and Papa's phones, and the weekly check-in on Skype. I'm glad for that. It'll make it seem less like a real goodbye and more like a temporary parting. The excitement of the adventures ahead also has a role in pushing down the sadness. Anyway, Mama's come back with the croissant and lemon bar, so that's all for now. See you later!
