Although I can't find the logic in it, having clocked many hundreds of hours on planes, I find myself increasingly nervous about flying. Not quite at the public meltdown level, but feeling trapped in my seat, worried about turbulence, and the possibility of something "going wrong".
Many theories abound - my advanced age and inner ear stuff, images and events involving planes in the last decade, concern for kids. None of it feels totally spot on, but I know of more than a few other people who have had this creep up on them. And I also know for sure that the kids love flying and are not scared.
I felt it was time to do something constructive about it, so in partnership with my friend Erin we signed up for the SOAR video course and are working through our flight anxiety. It teaches some good tools, in the general vein of "go to your happy place" but more scientific-y. You need to practice so that it becomes an automatic response, rather than just wait until you are freaked out in the moment. It all feels a little weird but I hope that it can make a difference.
Embarking on a trip that will definitely involve several long haul flights, it seems like time well spent. Anyone else have similar issues and/or solutions? My back up plan is to feast on Outlander for 10 hours straight, that should provide some good distraction!
